What makes life meaningful?

Emma Slade was a high-flying debt analyst for a large investment bank, whilst one a business trip to Jakarta she was taken hostage in a hotel room. She thought she was lucky to come out of it unscathed, but soon she realised that her view on life had profoundly changed.

Following this experience, Emma embarked upon a journey of self-discovery that lead her to Bhutan where her eyes were open to a kinder, more peaceful way of living.

In 2012, Emma became a Buddhist nun and travelled regularly to Bhutan. In 2015, Emma formed her own charity “Opening Your Heart to Bhutan” to help young monks in one of the poorest areas in South-East Bhutan.
In 2017, she was awarded a Point of Light Award by the Prime Minister Theresa May for her services to Bhutan.

From the fast-paced city life to the stillness of Bhutan’s Himalayan mountains, Emma has spoken at events including the Oxford Human Rights Festival and TEDx. Her astonishing life is also captured in her inspiring book “Set Free”, available to enjoy across all Sydney, Work Club Global locations.
