Highly acclaimed nonprofit, events organisation finds flexibility in shared workspace

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. First launching in 2009, TEDxSydney (an independently organised event) has become the leading platform for the propagation of Australian ideas, creativity and innovation to the rest of the world.

Remo Giuffré, Founder and Licensee of TEDxSydney, and Susan McMahon, General Manager and Head of Operations, oversee all areas of the organisation and events supported by an incredible leadership team and an army of volunteers.


TEDxSydney needed dedicated headquarters

Prior to joining the Work Club Global community, the TEDxSydney team didn’t have a dedicated headquarters.  Traditionally the leadership team and their supporting team members worked remotely, staying connected online. Over the years, as the brand and team have grown, they have become one of the largest TEDx communities outside of the US. TEDxSydney now hosts 5-7 events throughout the year including their flagship event which hosted 5,000 attendees.

This success has therefore seen a need for an established office base for the leadership team and core team members to ensure efficient workflows and to foster creativity for future growth.


TEDxSydney’s requirements

In terms of establishing a headquarters, the TEDxSydney team explored many options to suit the needs of the team. Their core requirements included; flexible lease agreements, flexible space that could accommodate 1 to 20 team members, a creative non-sterile environment, central (easily accessible) location, 24/7 access and a space that reflected TEDxSydney’s mission.

The connection

Through connected networks, TEDxSydney met with Soren Trampedach, Founder of Work Club Global, to discuss the brief, understand the key criteria and ensure aligned values between the brands in order to fulfil the Work Club Global concept of creating spaces with like-minded people.

Both flexibility and location were crucial, and Work Club Global offered different spaces to suit the team’s fluctuating needs throughout the year. “The fluid nature of the space and flexibility in the memberships work perfectly for TEDxSydney” said Susan.


TEDxSydney new headquarters

In August 2014, TEDxSydney officially had a new Headquarters at Work Club Global, somewhere they could host leadership and core team meetings, invite TEDxSydney speakers for briefings and practice presentation sessions, meet with key partners and sponsors and create even bigger and better events.


Continued growth and flexibility in coworking spaces

With their growth in 2017 and expanding team, an alternate space was required. Their requirements of flexibility, late night access and a central location did not change but TEDxSydney were seeking larger meeting rooms, fixed desks and a dedicated space accessible to talent such as TEDxSydney speakers and performers.

Offering a simple walk-in and walk-out solution TEDxSydney’s membership was transferred to Work Club Sydney Barangaroo in May, 2018 in the lead up to their major event. Work Club Sydney Barangaroo is a larger space with more meeting areas and fixed desk locations. The location now accommodates the core leadership team members, contractors and flexible volunteer team. TEDxSydney have the following memberships allocated:

6 x Premium memberships for the core leadership team
4 x Associate members for the contractors
7 x Visiting memberships for volunteer team members

TEDxSydney have found that their investment in Work Club Global has been incredibly worthwhile and believes by having a unified team in a single location has contributed to the success the brand has experienced.
